Introduction

Malacca is a city in Malaysia, 6 hours drive away from Singapore. Malacca is known for its unique history and architecture while it was under Dutch rule. I went on this trip with my mom and the focus of this trip was to have a good getaway from Singapore, in search of good food!

Must try food in Malacca

You can head straight to the section after this to see the itinerary in the order of day.

1. Peranakan/Nyonya cuisine

Famous Peranakan dishes like Asam Pedas, Buah Keluak dishes and Babi Pongteh are chef’s kiss. You can try this at Peranakan Mansion and Cottage Spices but there are many other options around.

2. Chicken rice balls

Chicken rice is a famous dish in Singapore and Malaysia, Malacca makes it a bit different by shaping the rice into balls (supposedly to maintain its warmth). You can get this at Chop Chung Wah and Famosa Chicken Rice Ball. There are many similar stalls around too.

3. Cendol

Cendol is an amazing dessert made with gula melaka, coconut milk, pandan jelly, red beans and shaved iced, perfect for the hot weather there. This dish is served at almost every Peranakan restaurant and there are many food stalls selling it.

4. Coconut shake

There are few famous stalls selling this like Coconut Shake Batu Berendam and Klebang Original Coconut Shake.

5. Satay Celup

Satay Celup is like a Satay Steamboat where skewers are dunked into a hotpot of thick, spicy peanut sauce. As I am not a huge fan of satay, I did not try this dish either. You can try this dish at Ban Lee Siang Restoran.

Day 1

Lunch at Poh Piah Lwee – a small eatery that sells Nyonya Laksa, Poh Piah, Rojak, Minced meat Noodles and Nyonya Rice Dumplings. We got the Laksa, Poh Piah and Dumpling to share. The meal was simple comfort food!

Massage at Scents & Senses – a touch of Thai – Of course, we had to go for some Thai Massage while in Malaysia. It is so much cheaper compared to Singapore.

Melaka Straits Mosque – Aesthetically pleasing mosque to take Instagram pictures!

Dinner at the Cottage Spices – Got the Ikan Asam Pedas and Cincalok Omelette and of course, Cendol! The food was so good we returned the next day!

Night walk and Shopping at Jonker Street – Famous street in Malacca, offering various street food, eateries and street shopping. Very lively and crowded at night

Day 2

Breakfast at CK Coffee 1938 Global Resources – Traditional breakfast with modern coffee available. Highly recommend the Gula Melaka Latte and toast!

Visit the A Famosa and Christchurch – Famous attractions in Malacca known for their rich history.

Lunch at Peranakan Mansion – Gorgeous Peranakan interior, servers wearing Kebayas. We got the Babi Pongteh and Bbi Cili Garam and both were so good. Of course, we also got the Cendol and it was perfect. If I have to choose one dish, the Babi Pongteh definitely wins.

Massage at Scents & Senses – a touch of Thai – Yes, we went back for massage again. We were lucky there was space as we had no reservation. If you are not a fan of massage, you can always shop around as there are many huge malls around.

Cafe hopping at Sin See Tai – a small cafe serving pastries and drinks. Not the best croissant but the drink is very refreshing.

Dinner at Cottage Spices – Second time here and we got the Sambal Sotong Petai, Otak Otak and Ayam Buah Keluak. Highly recommend the Ayam Buan Keluak although the chicken is a bit dry but the flavor is so so good. Otak is also another dish I enjoyed but it can be subjective as this is not as spicy as normal otaks.

Day 3

Breakfast at Heng Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball – an eatery near our hotel.

Cafe hopping at The Daily Fix – Skeptical about this cafe at first as there was a long queue since the opening hours but we decided to give it a try since we had time. We got the truffle fries, iced gula melaka latte and pandan pancakes. The pancakes were so good and definitely lived up to its hype. The fries were also good but what can go wrong with truffle fries?

Head back HOME – Time for a 6 hour bus ride back home!
